Just bought this thing, ---- hope it works for a while. Its on the list to get towed home, --- I think it has a broken axle in the rear end, so had to put my order in with the towing company to send a wrecker down to drag it home, ----bout 75 miles away from us and it was too tall to push up on Mikes trailer so towing was best option.
Not sure what brand the unit is but looks like it could be a Hi-Ranger from pix on the internet. This one has 2 outriggers at the back of it,---some have 4.
1984 Ford F-700 truck, 460 motor, 5 + 2 transmission, decent tires, motor has slight exhaust leak-----probably a manifold gasket.
Bucket unit is a 65 footer, so that will do what I need.
Looked at the 1-ton models and they would be way to short for the trees I need to cut down.

sure thats a 460 in that truck Sonny? most were 370 long-stroke truck engines..an option was the 429 as well.

Ya, not sure what it actually is,---gotta wait till I get it home and try to see for sure. Somebody could have stuck a 460 in it at some point. Dont think its the original motor.

Getting closer to home! --- now its only 12 miles away at my buddies tow yard.
Guess he took the rotator down to drag it out with.
He says positively its a 460 motor in it. ---- original one was a 370 according to tags, so motor has been replaced along the way.
He just got the tri-axle rotator last year, making him 6 or 8 units so far! --- he keeps 10 guys running all the time.

well at least with the 460 Ford they are a lot more common and easy to find than the 370 truck engine. Altho you know a lot of the old engines and vehicles were scrapped back in the early 2000's when China was buying scrap..getting harder and harder to find anything from the 80's era of vehicles..even just trying to find an unmolested 350 Chevy is a challenge..best of luck with it Sonny

My little 1 ton is only 35'. I could use about another 10' but for what I paid for it I'm content. Nice catch Sonny.

Trying to get the axle shafts out of the rear end----no luck beating on them like they say you have to do to get them to come loose. -----I think one of them is broke, ----truck dont move and you can turn the driveshaft with little effort.
I never tackled a Ford before----- GM shafts come right out.---- OR at least the ones dad had did!
Ideas welcome here! lol!

Former owner had backed down a steep slope, worked on a tree, went to take off and as it started moving , something popped and he started rolling back down the hill. Sounds like axle BUT may not be . IF 2-sp. was not fully in and jumped out or broke when he took off that would be same noise. 2-sp. fork could be broke off.
I turned the driveshaft by hand and it aint hooked to anything----- no drag at all and no noise either.

if you broke an axle shaft you'd have some kind of drag in the axle as the opposite side would pose resistance..no drag sounds to me like a pinion broke off internally..but gawd them axles take a lot of torque shock over their lifetime..maybe like you say the 2sp idler broke? might haveta get ready for a big teardown Sonny..best of luck with it

Still cant get axles out, -- NOW I find the carb is messed up on it. Looks like they could have had it rebuilt shortly before I got it.
The way it is it wont rev up,--sounds like its flooding itself, smells like too much gas in the muffler fumes too.
The guy I got it from bitched about the amount of gas it use while he did his 6 trees, and I can see why it would use that much, cause carb is not right.---dont take rocket science to see and here the way the motor is running. Runs like choke is pulled out all the way but its in and working.

anyway here are a couple pix of the top of the motor,---I cant get down in there very close since its WAY down in there.
I just stood on a bucket in front and leaned over as far as I could to get pix of the carb.
I never messed with these 4bbl's before,---they WAY too complicated for me! --- too many micro parts and my stiff finger dont work half the time around little parts!

check for vacuum leaks..old hoses with cracks and splits can cause numerous issues..there are numerous carb rebuilders that will take your carb and rebuild it for you Sonny..
Carb rebuild service
Just a suggestion for you Sonny,FWIW they worked great for me..minimal adjustments required right out of the box..check your timing too on an old engine..best of luck

Looks like they put a new cap and wires on it too.--Hmmm wonder if it has that stupid electronic ignition module stuck in it??? -- another thing to check when spring comes. Also trying to figure out how to crawl up, over, and down to reach anything in there! The motor is WAY down in there!

could be something as simple as incorrectly gapped plugs as well Sonny..gotta start in the basement and work your way up on this one..can't assume that anything is right and you'll have to check it all over. Might even be a tooth out on the distributor..bucket trucks do most of their time idling..you'll find 'em out there low mileage and cheap but they have 35,000hrs idling time on them

Ya,-- they wore out the original 370 and somehow stuck this 460 in it! --never looked at the od.-- probably not many road miles on it. Cab is extremly good inside and out for its age. No hour meter on it so no way to tell how many hours are on this 460 either.

my truck had a new engine it would not run right at 100 miles I found that the new plugs were bad. autolight plugs to not work well in chevys but in fords they work well.

Sonny even if it's a junkyard 460, those were tough old Ford engines from the old days when shit was built good..A friend of mine(RIP-Jim) had a mud race truck with over 15grand in the 460 engine, with a Predator carb-that was one special engine..after standing on it for 2 seasons he finally blew it up and we threw a nuthin' special junkyard 460 back into it so he could finish the season,it wasnt quite as quick to rev out as the competition engine but even with a 150hp nitrous kit it still lasted a long time and was almost as fast in the truck..very tough engines..I think you have a stick trans in the F700 but watch the flexplates in automatics-the car flexplates have window openings cut in them and are lighter than the truck flxplates..
One thing I have learned on the Ford distributors is to use a cap cover boot for your distributor, they came on a lot of the 302's,itl fit your 460 distrib too.-its a rubber boot that covers the cap and wires on top of the distributor, keeps rain and water from getting into the cap and rotor..Ford might still stock them- DISTRIBUTOR BOOT COVER for Ford 302/351/460 P/N E5TE-12252-AA

Ya,--5-speed stick with 2- speed rear end. From what I hear the 460 was a good motor and this one seams strong, just slobbers like too much gas going in it!
Tom, I will have to take the plugs out and see what they are! could be the wrong ones!

Guys,--- you aint gonna believe this! --its the right hand axle broke. finally got the left side out and stuck a 1-3/4" bar thru the housing to the end of the right axle shaft and it never cracked with hittin it with a 16 pound hammer! I finally decided to brush the greasy dirt bead off that was on the backside of the hub,----BUT, after brushing on it,--- it shined!!!!!!!!!! -- YUP some a-hole WELDED the axle shaft to the hub! --- at this point all I could to was to start cutting pieces out!
The weld bead went all the way around the hub and got the shaft so hot that it took the temper out and when the guy rolled backwards down the hill and dumped the clutch while mashin the gas,----no wonder it broke. As you can see the break would be right at the heat line!
NOW I need another hub and axle shaft to put back in it.
Neighbor has an old late 70's 700 that was his brother's fuel delivery truck, so I am eyeing that one as a donor. Should be the same,---I HOPE! lol!

Got the gardens planted just in time before the storms hit yesterday. wish we had a little more land, but we make do with what we have.
[Linked Image from live.staticflickr.com]

Put in a drainage pipe because the garden is slightly raised and the water sets on this side. You can see the water line from storms we had last night. Hopefully this will help dry out the top part of the garden some. Beans & peas in the blocks again and cukes along my Shop.
