This is my old Onan They said it came out of a wrecked motorhome. It don't have a starter on the engine and someone told me that it was started thru the generator windings. Makes no sence to me, anyway, does anybody know if they can be used as stand alone generators? thanks; sonny

Sonny:
Near as I can gather from the Onan guru FAQs over on the smokestak your gen was made in march of 1971, outputs only 120 volts (as opposed to 120/240) was built to be an RV gen and engine was probably built by International Harvester.
The "Master Service Manual" can be downloaded here: Onan Master Service Manual
and a specific manual part number can be resolved from here: Onan Manual Lists

If you have a specific need let me know anc I'll search further.

I looked at the manual in the link.---No mention of how the one I have is s'posed to be started without a starter on the engine! I can't see a separate starter any where on mine! ---Kinda weird! That's why I have never messed with it, but gotta try something this year. Really need to sell it. I had an Onan cck way back when, that was out of a Westcoaster, mail 3-wheeler, that automotive style starter/alt on engine. also had clutch and 3-speed transmission! thanks; sonny

-Facing fan shroud the starter should be on right side behind shroud below right cylinder. Sorry about the "Master" service manual Looking through it I concur that it is a scattered joke. I did find a much smaller parts manual for CCKs. I put it up on my gdrive and you can download it here: Onan CCK Parts (About 7.7MB pdf)-

Update: WHOA! Scratch all above! Further digging revealed that it does indeed use gen head as a starter motor. Digging out proper manuals.

Okay Sonny, think I got all the pertinent manuals. All can be downloaded from here:Onan CCK Manuals

Looks like all you need is a center off (spring return) single pole double throw switch, then a breakout box to mount outlets in. A battery and muffler of course and probably a fuel tank and low pressure fuel pump.

One big concern with these old Onans is the top facing exhaust manifold connections. If left outside with exhaust pipe uncovered water can get in and hydrolock block or even rust internal cylinders. You might try turning engine over by hand to insure engine is free before you invest any more time or money.

Ya! -- no starter in the location that you said, for sure! just looked again and nuttin! Can't reach anything to turn engine over, might have to se how to take some covers off! At least we know how it is sposed to start. There is a big wad of wires coming out of the gen. and a junction box hanging on the end of it! Next thing would be to figure out the wires! Thanks; sonny

Pull that end cover off.. looks like only two bolts. Bet there's a way to turn the shaft there.

I saw different diagrams. Not sure if they show wire colors or not. I have to figure out some way to magnify my screen so I can see the wires. I was going to try printing a page so I can have paper to take out to the shed and try following them. Will have to take off as many covers as possible to see the wires. (probably)

Wires not color coded. Also according to manual the 4.0 is 2 wire output, and mine has 3 wires coming out together. --- From what I can tell from the manual, some of the 4.0's did have 3 wires in order to get 220, at 1/2 amps. The 110 side is 33.?. and 220 would be around 16.5 amps. Gotta dig deeper into the unit. Did get screen up big enough to actually read the number's in the manuals. Had to haul compost today so didn't get to do much on anything else!

Data plate clearly states that its a 120 unit Might be two separate circuits. Mine is like that has two breakers on it for out put BUT it's only 120.
