Got 8 flats of these bits at the auction Saturday. Missed out on some big collet adapters since they went way too high for me right now.

Sonny thats a nice morse taper drive drill, but the tang is broken off..easy fix but they don't last unless you harden it again which then affects the temper in the rest of the bit..Ive bought some in the past in box lots with broken drive tangs,TIG welded the tang back up with 100K psi rod and reground them back only to have them break off again under drive pressure in the drill press. The taper provides centering and some of the drive but the tang provides the majority of the drive to turn the bit. Looks like you got into the larger bits with Morse #4's and #5s tapers..those are truly a sight to behold when turning and making a chip stringer..I like the shortie bits that are half-length..I woulda fought you on those at auction thats for sure..probably all USA made, Cleveland Twist Drill was one of the biggies

Ya. usa made! ---one has British something stamped on it for some reason but looks just like the rest of them. A few of them look like milling machine cutter bottoms, --- might have been that somebody ground them for that. dont know, but I had the high bid of $5. --- choice of boxes, so when asked which box I wanted,--I asked how many were left and they said 8 so being the smart ass that I am I said then I want 8! so $5 per box times 8 was $40 and I could only carry 2 boxes at a time to the truck! These things are HEAVY as hell!!! LOL!!!
I mainly wanted the big guy just cause its big!!! Nice collector piece. I saw the drive tang was broke off before I bought them.

Ive had some success using big morse bits in my lathe by mounting the bit up in the tailstock, then using the center steadyrest to support the bit in the middle and a big set of vicegrips to help keep it from grabbing and rotating..gotta take light cuts..even then it sometimes still grabs and rotates..biggest I can go is Morse 4 in my lathe tailstock..with using one morse size adapter the torque force overcomes the tang on the bit or adapters and shears it off..kinda like a safety fuse..I used to drill holes in steel flat plate that way, mount it up in a 4-jaw chuck..now I use the press..gotta use what u got.

U got a deal on those bits even if you only needed one..hell Ill give ya $50 for the balance..$350 in gas later I might make Arrowsmith,IL LOL
