Magnets came off flywheel and ate the stator. If I hook up a battery to the exciter it welds great. Any ideas as what I can do to fix it.. been searching for a year and can't find a replacement flywheel. stator is available, or was last time I looked.

Information on the engine If any one has an old Briggs engine or knows where I can get Parts..OR if any one knows if a flywheel off a newer model would work.

Jim, I will see if I can find my books on those engines, but IIRC a 14hp has the same flywheel as the 16hp does. There were several families in the I/C model line. 5hp, 8-10hp, 12 - 16hp and then those above. It has been awhile since I used them, and I do not remember where I put them.

I've been plugging around and can't even find a flywheel listed for that type.. Thought that kinda strange. Thinking about just fabricating a stub shaft like the ones they put on the kohler engines to run the hydrostatic drives like on my old Jacobsen and Cub cadets. Bolts to the flywheel to provide a shaft on that end too. Then just mount a external belt driven alternator or generator to keep the battery charged. Engine runs fine with no issue with the magneto just the darn alternator. battery doesn't last too long when it's feeding the windings. I thought that once you excited a generator it fed it's self. Those welder/ generators Different?

Is the flywheel cast iron or aluminum? I have one of each somewhere. I have a whole 12hp vertical shaft briggs you can have if it will work. I think the external alternator might be the handiest though. 1 wire GM alt with a disconnect so the engine can start without load. A good heavy duty 12 volt power source is never a bad thing.....

I tried to look up some parts, and only found the stator windings, no flywheels. Still looking!

So I gather the problem is the missing magnets inside flywheel? If so let me suggest these folks: Applied Magnetics - neodynium magnet suppiers.Bought some dandy magnets from them to build a windmill generator. (So dandy they truly scared me.) Cost was quite reasonable compared to others. Given the age of your unit you can probably signifcantly improve performance just by using stronger magnets. Poke around on the site for more options. Doc I hadn't thought of trying to glue new magnets on because the Last time I tried that the alternator didn't put out.. must have had a couple reversed or some thing. I'll have to check it out. I've learned a lot since then.

The flywheels I have look nothing like that on the inside. Sorry.

Found these on ebay...LOve the tape measure.. went out to the shop this morning and checked mine.. buy it now....We'll See. FlywheelStatorThe only difference I could see in the flywheel was the number of fins for the fan.. I can deal with that. Only thing to question is timing... looks the same but won't know for sure until I get it.

Jim I had a flywheel on a Kohler K181S 8HP that lost its magnets,I pulled the flywheel and the magnets had broken loose from the flywheel I got lucky cause they just moved together on the inside of the flywheel once they broke loose..I cleaned it all up and used JB Weld to reposition the magnets and it worked fine for a number of years then went bad again, one of the magnets disintegrated..I went on eBay and got another used flywheel..been OK ever since..we all take these older(but not really older)engines for granted-a lot of the old stuff is getting REALLY hard to find..thank god for eBay..so much of this kinda stuff got ground up and sent to China back in 2005 during the scrap steel price hike..

the kohler I have on the mini hoe is hard to get parts for. TH18S that engine seems to have a bad reputation. this one has been great with the exception of the fuel pump. I'm using an external electric pump.

Stator and flywheel arrived and installed. Generator works again... Catch 22 gotta modify the starter mount so the starter will engage the NEW flywheel. Had to start the engine with a socket on a drill. At least the thing works.. making a new starter mount shouldn't be too bad.

Now that you have a working example, you might use a cheap compass and map how magnet polarity are mounted. Just a thought. Doc

Now that you have a working example, you might use a cheap compass and map how magnet polarity are mounted. Just a thought. Doc First thought was to see if I could move the magnets over to the old flywheel. second thought was these twin cylinder flywheels seem to be readily available. It's funny that the magneto and generator parts all line up but the ring gear falls about an inch short from the starters reach. I have re-glued magnets back on flywheels successfully before when all the magnets were intact. I'll have to experiment on the old one and see if acetone or even MEK will dissolve the adhesive. I have an idea for what I need to do with the starter but it was getting dark and I was over it for the day and this wasn't really a planned project. my wire feed runs off my generator just fine so I really don't have a need for this old beast. in fact that's what I've been using for the past year and a half when this one went down. I just hate to write off any machine if it can be fixed. I HAVE WAY TOO MANY PROJECTS. I'm like a dog with the squirrel can't stay focused....
